NORMAL – Machayla Leonard considers herself solid as a rock when it comes to helping a team keep its composure on the volleyball court.

“I bring to the team a steadiness, I’m not superemotional on the court,” the Illinois State redshirt-sophomore said.

Few college athletes have endured what Leonard already has in life. It was her father’s sudden death last October that prompted the Normal Community alum to consider moving closed to home.

Leonard transferred after her sophomore season at Toledo to ISU in the spring.

“There’s definitely a sense of family here,” Leonard said. “Everyone is here to support you. Everyone has your back.”

Her father Ken, who was an actuary at Willis Towers Watson, ran track and later coach track and field at ISU. Her mother Lana played softball at ISU. Her sister Mackenzie has committed to ISU for soccer.

Leonard is one of six newcomers on the Redbird volleyball roster and not the only transfer who came to town after Melissa Myers’ sudden resignation as coach in June.

Senior Juma Armando, a native of Toronto who was born in Angola, came to ISU in March after planning to transfer from Chicago State.

“It was a bit shocking when (Myers) left here, but the staff here are great,” Armando said. “(New coach Leah Johnson) and I are both coming into a new environment and we’ve adapted well to it.”

Armando grew up in Toronto with her aunt and uncle, which her parents remain in Angola.

(My aunt and uncle) will be here for senior night but hopefully more games they will try to come out,” Armando said.

ISU opens the season taking on UC-Santa Barbara at 4 p.m. Friday in Waco, Texas. The Redbirds’ home opener is Sept. 8 against Dayton.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
