PEORIA – State and local police are stepping up patrols for the Labor Day weekend focusing on drunk drivers.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is underway in Illinois.

State Department of Transportation spokeswoman Gianna Urgo said motorists should expect to see more cops on the roads.

“Police will be out in full force during this heavily-traveled holiday weekend conducting roadside safety checks and impaired driving patrols to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries,” Urgo said.

“It’s all the mort important to remember to not drink and drive and to buckle up every time you are in the car,” Urgo said.

Last year’s Labor Day weekend was the deadliest in five years, with 23 people dying in crashes on Illinois roads.

I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
