BLOOMINGTON – Coach Norm Eash’s motto for his Illinois Wesleyan football team this season is ‘Sense of Urgency.’

After the Titans displayed the urgency in dispatching No. 3-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater in one of the Titans’ most celebrated wins in program history, Eash is seeking another phrase to define his team as it prepares for Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday at Tucci Stadium.

“Anything is possible,” Eash said. “I think that is going to drive us for he rest of the season.

The win over the Warhawks catapulted IWU into the Division III rankings at number 14. Eash said as big as the win was, the Titans are already looking ahead to this week.

“We all enjoyed the victory on Saturday and Saturday night, but Sunday there was a sense I felt of back to business,” Eash said. “One game doesn’t make a season.”

Receiver Jack Healy who caught both Wesleyan touchdowns in the win, said he’s not concerned about a letdown, especially with the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opener at No. 6 North Central in one week.

“We’re not worried,” Healy said. “We’re just playing to be 2-0, but we’re not taking anyone lightly. Sure (Nebraska Wesleyan is) not the caliber of Whitewater, but that doesn’t change anything for us.”

Titans defensive back Trevor Koepke, who had two big fumble recovering in the win, said his focus is on the next opponent.

“Even though it was a huge win for the program and for ourselves as a team, we are looking at Nebraska Wesleyan now,” Koepke said.

WJBC and WJBC.com will have the game at 12:30 p.m.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
