High scores rule Week 5 high school football

Central Catholic’s first loss, Normal West’s record-setting night and unusually high scores highlighted Week 5 of high school football.

Monticello 49, Central Catholic 28

Lucal Leib rushed for 84 yards and three touchdowns as No. 3 Monticello defeated Central Catholic, 49-28, in a battle of undefeated teams in the Illini Prairie Conference.

Branden Snyder connected with Alex Bundy on a 74-yard pass over the middle to give the Sages a 28-14 lead at halftime. Bundy electrified again, taking the second half opening kickoff 90 yards for a score.

Sa’Mond Davis rushed for 109 yards on 24 carries and scored two touchdowns for the Saints (4-1) and Max Moews threw for 184 yards and two touchdowns.

Peoria 94, Bloomington 54

The host Lions continued to roll up high offensive numbers as they pulled away from the Purple Raiders at Peoria Stadium. Bloomington’s Colton Sandage threw for 376 yards, three touchdowns and 93 rushing yards.

Normal Community 56, Peoria Richwoods 27

The Ironmen (5-0) remain unbeaten and take over sole possession of the Big Twelve Conference lead in a penalty-filled win over Richwoods (3-2).

Normal West 76, Danville 35

The Wildcats (4-1) scored a school record number of points for a single game as they handed the Vikings their first loss and created a four-team logjam for second place in the Big Twelve Conference.

Danville appeared ready to score early in the second half when Wildcat senior defensive back Tre Matthews intercepted a pass and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown.

West scored on 10 of their 11 possessions.

Decatur MacArthur 21, U-High 7

After a scoreless first quarter, the hosts led 7-0 at halftime and built the lead to two touchdowns in the third period.

Doug Holmes was 12-of-31 for 147 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions for U-High (1-4). MacArthur (5-0) received 130 yards on 12-of-21 passing from Amir Brummett, who also carried 20 times for 65 yards. The Generals are tied with Rochester at the top of the Central State Eight Conference.

Tri-Valley 52, Heyworth 0

The host Vikings (4-1) led 6-0 after one quarter, but broke open the contest with a strong pass rush that recorded seven sacks. Zach Woodring carried 13 times for 185 yards and added an 18-yard catch. Heyworth falls to 1-4.
