NORMAL – The FBI’s involvement in the unfolding college basketball recruiting scandal has come as a shock to Illinois State men’s basketball coach Dan Muller, although he welcomes the clean-up of his sport.

Muller told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin he’s aware that some coaches will take any steps to land blue-chip players.

“Me personally, I still a lot of times don’t understand how you get the cheating done. I’m naive to that,” Muller said. “But you certainly hear a lot of stories about it. It’s pretty sad, but in a lot of ways it’s a great thing for our sport and for college athletics.”

Muller said he’s shocked that some coaches could be going to prison for their actions.

Muller said the decision to play by the recruiting rules must be a philosophical choice made in advance.

“I think when you’re a young college coach, you also have to make a personal decision,” Muller advised. “Because if you try to decide in the moment, you can make the wrong decision.”

Muller credits his coaching mentor, Kevin Stallings, for setting an example by refusing to cheat.

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
