NORMAL – A resolution is being drafted intended to make all school kids feel welcome in Unit 5, including so-called Dreamers, according to the district’s superintendent.

A month ago, Bloomington’s District 87 school board unanimously adopted a resolution embracing diversity and seeking to provide a welcoming and safe environment for all students and their families.

Like his District 87 counterpart, Unit 5 Superintendent Mark Daniel said he’s heard some of the same fears from kids worried about their futures in the U.S. due to the divisive political debate about what to do with kids, whose parents are undocumented immigrants.

Daniel said learning should be students’ main concern.

“We’re always going to be first and foremost concerned with our students and their ability to come to school, feel as if they’re there for an education, and not to have concerns other than that. That is their purpose, to learn and to hopefully assimilate and be productive citizens,” the superintendent said.

School Board President Jim Hayek said he would entertain a declaration to make kids feel at ease, even though he considers Unit 5 a “fairly inclusive” district.

“We support all the kids of the district, regardless of where they come from, or their backgrounds. That’s the beauty of public education,” Hayek added.

Superintendent Daniel said there’s no timetable for a resolution to be presented to the Unit 5 school board. He said some of the same kids who lobbied in Springfield for an end to the budget impasse are helping draw up the resolution.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
