DCFS cuts back on privatizing program after rise in child deaths

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is rebooting its privatized child welfare program.

The intact family services program was examined by the Chicago Tribune after a surge of child deaths. The agency revealed at a legislative hearing that the department is taking over some cases that were handed over to contracted nonprofits.

Fifteen children died of abuse or neglect from 2012 to 2016 while their families were enrolled in the Intact Family Services program. Deaths surged after DCFS privatized the program, which is designed to keep families together when possible.
