The Illinois High School Association football playoffs are underway with most area squads squaring off Saturday afternoon.

Four games can be heard on WJBC.com. Click here to listen.

Normal Community hosts Downers Grove North in a Class 7A opener at 1 p.m. Ironmen coach Wes Temples has been readying his squad for an aggressive defense.

“They sit in a 3-3 and play it unbelievably aggressively,” Temples said. “We’ve told our kids we’ve got to be prepared for the speed they’re going to play at because I’m not sure we’ve seen that yet.”

Normal West is also home on Saturday with a 2 p.m. kickoff against Blue Island Eisenhower in a Class 6A opener.

“They don’t have tremendous size but they run the ball really well,” Wildcats coach Darren Hess said about the visitors. “We’re going to have to be pretty balanced to keep them off-balance.”

Central Catholic hosts Beardstown in a Class 3A first round affair. Saints coach Mike Moews said Beardstown runs a classic offense.

“They’re kind of a wing-style, predominantly run offense,” Moews said. “They have good size up front and really come at you. They don’t have a whole bunch of blazers or a lot of speed, but they just try to pound on you.”

Tri-Valley hosts South Macoupin at 3 p.m. in a Class 2A battle that can also be heard on WJBC.com.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
