NORMAL – Illinois State men’s basketball coach Dan Muller has signed two players, Rey Idowu and Demontay Dixon, to National Letters of Intent for the 2018-19 season.

Idowu, who is currently at Clearwater Academy International, is 6-feet-9, 240 pounds. He played previously with Holy Trinity High School, and during the 2016-17 season helped his team to a 21-7 record, and an appearance in the Class 5A region semifinal. He averaged 15 points and 13 rebounds last season for Holy Trinity.

“Rey is a hardworking, blue-collar player who can rebound the ball at an elite level,” said Muller. “He is also very skilled for his size and runs the court extremely well. Rey has tremendous upside and will come on campus with a great college-ready body.”

He played in the AAU circuit with Team Speights.

“Rey will be an amazing asset to our student body as well,” Muller noted. “He is an outstanding student and plans to major in our business program, focusing on finance. We are very excited to add Rey to the Redbird Family.”

Dixon, a senior at Summit High School in Spring Hill, Tennessee, is 6-feet-9, 190 pounds. He helped Summit to an 18-4 record last season, and was named to the all-district, all-region, and Third Team All-Mid-State. He averaged nearly 17 points, eight rebounds, and two blocked shots per game during his junior season.

“We are extremely excited to add Demontay to this class,” said Muller. “Demontay is a versatile forward that is very talented with the ball. His ability to make plays for himself and others is unique for his size.”

As a sophomore at Grace Christian Academy, he averaged 15.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.5 blocked shots per game, while recording five double-doubles during the season. His season high came on Dec. 5 with 25 points, while he pulled down 16 rebounds on Dec. 29.

The Spring Hill, Tenn. native, played for Team Thad during the summer AAU season.

“With his size and athletic ability he can be a mismatch while also giving him the ability to guard multiple positions,” commented Muller. “Demontay is a terrific young man that comes from a basketball family and will be a huge part of our program while he is here.”

The Redbirds open the 2017-18 regular season on Saturday, when the team travels to Fort Myers, Florida, to take on the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles at noon.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
