BLOOMINGTON – Joe Walters has resigned as head football coach at Bloomington High School after two seasons.
Walters was head football coach at Peoria Notre Dame for six seasons before taking over Purple Raiders football, and he said he wants to return to coaching in a faith-based setting.
“Faith is what it’s all about for me in coaching,” Walters said. “To coach at Bloomington was a great opportunity. We couldn’t use faith maybe as much as we wanted. Early on, we probably used it too much and later on, we had to tone it down.”
Walters said he plans to join the staff of Central Catholic boys basketball coach Jason Welch.
“You want to live by your principles and the faith you believe in, so that needs to be the driving factor,” Walters said. “I try to keep an internal scorecard about that kind of stuff, so it’s easy to make decisions when they arrive when you do.”
The Purple Raiders were 9-9 in his two seasons.
