NAPERVILLE – Illinois Wesleyan’s Norm Eash won his sixth Bob Reade Coach of the Year honor on Tuesday and first since 2009 after leading the Titans to a share of the CCIW title and an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Football Championship.

“The best thing I probably did is hire all the staff members I have because they’ve done a tremendous job preparing our kids all year,” Eash said. “It really goes to my assistant coaches and the football team.”

IWU senior linebacker Jordan Hassan was named the Don Larson Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the first Titan since Nick Nikolich in 2009 to win the award.

“Jordan had a tremendous year, for someone who did not start in his first three years in college,” Eash said. “That’s not to say that he didn’t play but he waited his turn and he’s had a phenomenal senior year.”

Hassan headlined a list of 13 Titans who earned All-CCIW honors.

IWU junior defensive back Trevor Staley and junior defensive lineman Eric Dubose were named First Team All-CCIW Defense, while sophomore receiver Jack Healy and senior offensive lineman Nick Monferdini made First Team All-CCIW Offense.

Second-team All-CCIW honors went to sophomore defensive back Trevor Koepke, senior linebackers Josh Akin and Brinton Wilkey, senior defensive lineman Justin Krzeckowski, sophomore quarterback Brandon Bauer, junior running back Morgan Alexander and senior offensive lineman Connor Melvin and Mike Mulcrone.

Illinois Wesleyan will host Case Western Reserve in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs on Saturday at Tucci Stadium.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
