NORMAL – State Sen. Jason Barickman, R-Bloomnigton, is helping students learn more about state government.

He hosted a youth advisory day on Wednesday, immersing students in the world of politics, giving those in the youth advisory council an opportunity to meet elected officials and local leaders. They also worked in small groups discussing new ideas for legislation.

“I think that we can tap into their energy and ideas, and hopefully wet their appetite for whether it’s a career in public service, or it’s simply serving their community in some capacity as their growing in their life,” said Barickman, State Senator of the 53rd District.

During their next meeting at the state capitol, amidst the spring legislative session, the students chosen at Wednesday’s council will get to debate their idea and give their proposal for further action.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
