NORMAL – The first-ever graduate of Illinois State University’s Peace Corps Prep program is gearing up to make a difference in the lives of others.

Undergraduate Sabrina Jaffer won’t cross the graduation stage until May, but one month after she receives her diploma she’ll be heading off for 3 months of training with the Peace Corp.

While initially surprised the turnaround is so soon, Sabrina explains she’s excited about getting out in the world to help people.

“I just always want to be giving back,” Sabrina said. “I’ve been really, really blessed with opportunities in my life, so I always really want to give back to other people and help other people.”

An Elementary Education major, Sabrina will be teaching English as a second language in Malawi, a country in South Africa. She plans on living there for two years.

However, Sabrina is already an experienced volunteer. Speaking with WJBC’s Susan Saunders, Sabrina recalls her family’s efforts in Haiti to assist in earthquake clean-up.

“My family has done mission work in Haiti since I was 15 and so we’ve worked with a lot of orphanages, schools, things like that,” “They really wanted to open my eyes and my sister’s eyes to what’s going on in the world.”

Sabrina said approximately 22,000 applications are turned in each year for 4,000 positions within the Peace Corps.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
