NORMAL – Santa Claus is coming to town. Uptown actually.

Uptown Normal welcomes the return of Ole Saint Nick on Saturday for the grand opening of Santa’s Station.

The festivities will start as 12:30 p.m. with a mini parade welcoming Santa, Mrs. Santa and their elves. They will be escorted by the Normal Fire Department, the Normal Police Department, and U-High’s Marching Band.

During the mini parade, there will be a pause in traffic flow on North Street from School Street to Uptown Circle including intersections and along the south side of Uptown Circle.

Once Santa and his crew arrives, there will be short program by U High’s band, and Santa’s Station will be open for visitors from 1-4:30 pm. Santa’s Station is free, but donations will be accepted to benefit various non-profit organizations. Grand opening donations will be given to Special Olympics.

The holiday fun will continue through the afternoon with free hot chocolate and funnel cakes and free carriage rides provided by Hileman Carriage Service from noon-4 pm.

Santa’s Station hours and carriage rides schedule are available at www.uptownnormal.com. Santa is still seeking volunteer elves. Anyone interested may contact Adam Fox at [email protected].

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
