SPRINGFIELD – The unemployment rate held steady last month in Illinois, but jobs were down a bit.

November’s jobless rate came in at 4.9 percent, the same as in October and a big improvement over this time last year. State Department of Employment Security spokesmen Bob Gough said there were some job losses last month.

“Government jobs were down and payroll declines, also financial activities and other services,” Gough said. “We did see gains though in manufacturing and construction, also in professional and business services.”

Gough noted while the year has been full of ups and downs there’s been a net increase of nearly 24,000 jobs over the year to date.

I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
