BLOOMINGTON – The idea of a Downtown Bloomington hotel and conference center might have been revived.

During the public comment portion of Monday night’s city council meeting, developer Jim Pearson of The Vantage Group lobbied for a 110 room hotel and conference center attached to Grossinger Motors Arena.

Pearson, also a Bloomington Planning Commissioner, said the development would finish the arena project the way it should have been done ten years ago.

“I brought you a solution and a goal for success,” said Pearson.

“Are you willing to step up and join the partnership team concept for Bloomington’s revitalization as the new premier city of the Twin Cities?”

Pearson noted the city owns the property, so there would be no additional cost to taxpayers.

He said he’ll present detailed plans for the project to city staff in the coming weeks.

Also, Mayor Tari Renner presented his fifth State of the City address.

Fixing streets and infrastructure, and revitalizing underperforming areas like Eastland Mall are his top priorities.

He said the council has to make some tough choices in coming up with ways to overcome what’s expected to become a $3 million budget deficit.

“We’ve either got to cut some services that may very well be quite popular. Or we need to try to figure out more creative ways to deliver services without cutting them, or we have to figure out ways to impose either user fees and obviously the dreaded “T, tax word,” Renner said.

The mayor and council have said before they don’t favor property tax increases to balance the budget even though revenue is flat or declining, and expenses are creeping higher.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
