Illinois State stunned by Sycamores of Indiana State

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State used a 17-0 first-half run to take a lead it would not give, as the Illinois State Redbirds fell in Terre Haute by an 84-54 final score.

How It Happened

The Redbirds jumped out quickly, scoring the first two baskets, and holding Indiana State scoreless for the first 4:23 of the game; however, the Sycamores responded in a big way, scoring 17 straight points, and taking a 17-4 lead eight and a half minutes into the contest. Illinois State was able to close the deficit to 11 following a Daouda N’Diaye dunk; however, the Redbirds could not get within single digits, and went into the locker room trailing 42-27.

The Sycamores opened the second half on a 14-5 run through the first five minutes of the second half, and the hosts cruised to the 30-point victory.

N’Diaye scored twice in the first three minutes of the game, and the Redbirds held a 4-0 lead through the first four and a half minutes of the game.

Inside the Box Score

  • Phil Fayne scored a team-high 13 points, making 5-of-10 shots from the field, and 3-of-5 from the charity stripe. He also added a team-high nine rebounds in the loss.
  • N’Diaye tied a career-high with nine points, grabbed three rebounds and blocked two shots.
  • Milik Yarbrough scored nine points with four rebounds in 17 minutes of action.
  • William Tinsley scored eight points, including making 2-of-3 three-pointers, and pulling down four rebounds.
  • Keyshawn Evans dished out a team-high two assists.

Stat of the Game

42-27, times two: For the second time this season (Evansville on Dec. 23 was the other), Illinois State and its opponent had the same point totals for both halves, for the Redbirds it was 27 in both halves, and for Indiana State it was 42 in both halves.

What’s Next

Illinois State remains on the road, and travels to face off against Northern Iowa on Jan. 24. The game marks the first time this season that Illinois State has had two consecutive true road games.
