Redbird women’s second-half struggles forces second-straight MVC loss

NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State Women’s Basketball dropped to Northern Iowa 58-36.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Northern Iowa put in the first basket of the game with a jump shot by Rose Simon-Ressler. The Redbirds quickly responded with a layup by Viria Livingston. The teams would tie one more time, but the Birds controlled the first quarter after Illinois State went on a 4-0 run. The Birds kept the lead to finish the first quarter ahead 15-9.

Livingston put in two for the Birds to open the second quarter. The Panthers responded with an eight point run to change the game and take an 18-17 lead. The teams battled it out in back-and-forth style and would enter halftime tied at 24 each.

One minute into the third quarter, the Panthers netted a 3-pointer to jump ahead 27-24. Livingston responded with two for the Birds to trail 27-26. The Redbirds were scoreless in the next five minutes and UNI took advantage. The Panthers racked up a 10-point lead with 4:03 to play in the third. Simone Goods put an end to the Redbird drought as she drove to the basket. Goods was fouled and completed the 3-point play going1-for-1 at the charity stripe. The Panther offense answered with a 10-point streak to enter the fourth quarter up 46-29.

The Redbirds faced difficulty overcoming the deficit and fell short in the fourth, resulting in a 58-36 loss.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Megan Talbot led for the Birds with seven points and grabbed two rebounds. Livingston followed with six points and four rebounds.
  • Hannah Green had a new career high with 11 rebounds. This is her seventh game this season with eight plus boards and her 11th game in her career.
  • Kennedy Kirkpatrick and Ellie Howell led for the Panthers with 12 points and 10 points respectively.

What’s Next
The Redbirds begin the second run of MVC games as they host the Loyola Ramblers on Friday night.
