ST. LOUIS – For the fourth time this season, Illinois State junior Milik Yarbrough has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week.
Yarbrough averaged 18.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and six assists per game in a 1-1 week for the Redbirds. He made 15-of-29 shots from the field (.517), and added four steals. Against Northern Iowa he scored 20 points while pulling down a career-high-tying 13 rebounds. He also added five assists and a steal, and made 8-of-17 shots from the field. In the team’s win over Valparaiso he scored 17 points while pulling down eight rebounds and dishing out seven assists.
He joins four other players for sixth-most Newcomer of the Week honors in a season, including former Redbird standout Daishon Knight.
This season he has 10 games where he has pulled down at least five rebounds while dishing out at least five assists in the same game. His season averages of 16.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game are one of its kind in the NCAA, and there have been just 25 players in NCAA history to finish a season with those such numbers.
This season Yarbrough is fourth in the MVC in scoring, averaging 16.9 points per game, eighth in rebounds at 6.1 per contest, and second with 4.6 assists per game. He remains one of 12 players in NCAA Division I to rank in the top 10 of his conference in all three statistical categories. He also shoots 47.5 percent from the field, 31.9 percent from long range, and 78.4 percent from the charity stripe.
The Redbirds return to action on Tuesday when the team travels to Springfield, Missouri, to take on the Missouri State Bears in a 7 p.m. tipoff.
