QUINCY – There are two more laboratory-confirmed cases of Legionnaires’ disease at the troubled Quincy veterans’ home.
The victims are battling respiratory illness and are said to be doing well. The Illinois Department of Public Health says its engineering staff has removed faucets from the residents’ rooms at the Illinois Veterans’ Home in Quincy, collected water samples and taken other steps to ensure safe water.
U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, both Illinois Democrats, issued a joint statement slamming Gov. Bruce Rauner for the administration’s response to the outbreaks.
“We have seen nothing from the governor’s office – no final plan of action, no formal funding request, just more publicity stunts and promises of a task force review of proposals that should have begun years ago. Despite his goal, we’ve now seen two new cases of Legionnaire’s in the same buildings as previous outbreaks. This is outrageous.”
The disease is caused by bacteria in water vapor that’s inhaled. Thirteen residents have died at the facility since Legionniares’ Disease The issue has been a persistent once since a 2015 outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease.
