Hank Aberle

Harold “Hank” Aberle passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018 at Meadows Mennonite Nursing home Chenoa, Ill. where he had been a resident for just over four years. He was 89 years old.

Hank was born on March 26, 1928 in Strawn, Ill. to Carl and Lydia Aberle. One of 10 children, he was raised on the family farm southeast of Chatsworth and attended and graduated from Chatsworth High School in 1947. After high school, Hank proudly served in the United States Army and fought in the Korean War.

Upon returning home from the military, Hank settled on the family farm and on Jan. 10, 1959 married his beloved wife Donna Leonard at St. Patrick’s Church in Kankakee, Ill. Hank and Donna were happily married for 46 years until Donna’s passing in 2005.

In addition to farming for more than 50 years, Hank was a very active member of the Chatsworth community. He was a proud member of Legion Post 613, where he served two terms as Post Commander. Hank also was a member of the Board of Directors of Citizens Bank of Chatsworth for nearly 40 years and served on a variety of other boards and committees in Chatsworth and surrounding communities.

In addition to his wife Donna, Hank was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Elmer, William, Reuben and Ezra; and his sisters Elizabeth and Leota.

Hank is survived by his sons; Dennis (Debbie) of Thawville and Scott (Kathleen) of Lake Forest, Ill.; his six grandchildren; Renee, Kristen, Matthew, Annie Charlie and Tommie; his two great-grandchildren; three sisters; Rose, Anne and Lois and several loving nieces, nephews and numerous other relatives.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Feb. 21, 2018 at Calvert & Martin Funeral Home, 311 E Walnut St, Chatsworth, Ill. 60921. Visitation will be held from 12-2 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery Chatsworth where military rites will be accorded.

Hank was a loving and devoted husband and a hero to his two sons. He will be dearly missed by all of those who knew him.

Timothy AlticTimothy Altic

Timothy W. Altic, 51 of Bloomington, Ill. passed away on Friday, Feb. 16, 2018 in Bloomington.

A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, Feb. 23, 2018 at 10 a.m. at the Compass Ministry Center, Bloomington, 716 E. Empire Suite A (next of Alpha Graphics) with Stacey Lux officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Cremation rites were accorded.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family in care of Nexus Church 716 E. Empire Suite A, Bloomington, Ill. 61701 or to the Special Olympics.

Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.

Tim was born on April 16, 1966 in Maroa, Ill. He is the son of David and LaVon (Riley) Altic Sr. He married Amy Mayer on Sept. 12, 1992 in LeRoy.

He is survived by his mother LaVon Altic of Bloomington, his wife and their children; Courtney (Nathan) Gamage and Grant Altic both of Bloomington. He is also survived by his brother David Altic Jr. of Bloomington and his mother-in-law; Geneva Mayer.

He was preceded in death by his father and father-in-law; George Mayer.

Tim was a graduate of Bloomington High School Class of 1984. He worked at Tele Courier for 13 years and was a member of Vale Church of Bloomington. Tim loved music, he was an avid Chicago White Sox fan and Star Trek fan, in which he had a signed original screen play for the Star Trek Television Series.

Tim was a loving son, husband, father, uncle, and great uncle and will be greatly missed by all of them.

Joan GarrelsJoan Garrels

M. Joan Garrels, 88, formerly of Bloomington, passed away at 6:30 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018 at Seville Care Center in Salem, Missouri.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bloomington with Rev. Thomas Wirsing officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens, Bloomington. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2018 at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington and from 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Joan was born Dec. 25, 1929 in Bloomington, the daughter of James and Jessie Woodard Shaffer and was raised by her stepfather, Lester Hinchee. She married Vernon A. “Art” Garrels on Oct. 12, 1951 in Bloomington and he preceded her in death on Sept. 28, 2012.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda (Bob) Westerfield of Salem, Mo., a grandson, Jason Westerfield of Bloomington; a brother, Ronald (Zelda) Hinchee of Bloomington; a sister-in-law, Agnes Garrels of El Paso and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Julia Ann Garrels; twin grandchildren, Carrie and Michael Westerfield; a sister-in-law, Carol Garrels and a brother-in-law, Robert “Peewee” Garrels.

Joan worked at Sunbeam Baker for many years as well as the Bloomington City Clerk’s office for several years and served as a deputy Registrar for the Bloomington Board of Election Commission.

Joan was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary at VFW Post 454 and American Legion Post 56, both in Bloomington.

Joan was an avid flower gardener and enjoyed spending time outside in the yard.
