PEORIA – Less that 24 hours after losing to play in the State Championship, Central Catholic (26-7) claimed Third Place in Class 2A with a 69-61 win over Pickneyville (31-5) at Carver Arena.

The Saints came out looking for revenge, jumping out to an early 14-8 first quarter lead backed behind senior guard Austyn Ellison’s 22 points and seven rebounds. Saints coach Jason Welch said the win comes down to how his seniors took control.

“I’m so proud of those guys, (and their) wonderful senior leadership,” Welch said. “Guys came and stepped up, (I’m) awful proud of them.”

Hot shooting for the Saints continued in the second quarter forcing the Saints to lead 35-20 at the half. Welch said the Saints took control in the second half out hustling the Panthers.

“We had a nice lead at halftime,” Welch added. “I thought (that) ultimately our kids made one or two more plays, and again those guys (seniors) stepped up and (I’m) so proud of them.”

The Panthers clawed their way back in the second half, but hot shooting from Ellison helped the Saints secure the win. Welch added that even though the season was a grind, it was worth every minute of it.

“They (the Central Catholic Saints) work extremely hard, and again some seniors came off of the bench (and helped secure the win),” Welch said. “They weren’t fearful of the stage and did a great job.”

Junior Tommy Nelson chipped in nine points in the win.

Central Catholic will hold a ceremony celebrating the win on Monday at the High School at 11:40 p.m. in the commons.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
