BLOOMINGTON – The Central Illinois Flying Aces have announced a pair of fundraising efforts to support the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, in the wake of last Friday’s bus crash in which 16 people died.

The Flying Aces will donate proceeds from their end-of-season jersey auction and this Saturday’s 50/50 raffle to the Broncos organization.

The online jersey auction is open immediately for bidding and allows fans the chance to win an authentic game-worn red Flying Aces jersey from the 2017-18 season, the first season under the Flying Aces identity and the organization’s fourth season total in the USHL. The auction will close at 5 p.m. Monday. Following the conclusion of the auction, the Flying Aces will donate 50 percent of all proceeds to the Broncos.

In addition to the jersey auction, the Flying Aces will also donate all the proceeds from Saturday night’s 50/50 raffle, which will take place at the final home game of the season at Grossinger Motors Arena in downtown Bloomington. Fans can purchase 50/50 raffle tickets outside of Section 110 at the Flying Aces Booster Club booth or from 50/50 raffle ticket sellers that will be positioned throughout the arena during the game.

As of this release, the Humboldt Broncos GoFundMe  page has raised $8.7 million to help families and loved ones travel to Humboldt and aid in the medical and funeral costs for the players and staff involved in the accident.

Central Illinois hosts the Chicago Steel at 7:07 p.m. Saturday in its regular season and home finale.

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
