NORMAL – You may have to change that lucky bag you bring to an Illinois State University game.

Bags carried into Illinois State University athletic events must now be clear for security purposes.

“It’s not a new thing by any stretch of the imagination in college athletics,” ISU Assistant Athletics Director for Communications Mike Williams said. “Any of our fans that went up to our Northwestern game a couple of years ago for football had the same policy, so it’s become a definite trend, especially at the bigger Division I universities.”

The university said the policy will allow spectators to pass through security checks more quickly.

“This world that we live in unfortunately can be a dangerous place sometimes, so we want to do everything we can to make sure that our fans who come into our facilities are safe, are controlled, that while they are having a good time feel safe doing it,” Williams added.

Permitted Items according to the university:

• Foam seat pads and small non-pocket seat cushions without storage slots

• Binoculars- CASES are not permitted

• Cell phones

• Small cameras (those with lens shorter than 6 inches) and radios

• Blankets and rain apparel—UMBRELLAS are not permitted

• Unopened/sealed bottle of water

Prohibited Items:

• All non-clear bags (including purses, backpacks, fanny packs, etc.)

• Animals (except service animals)

• Containers of any kind (including coolers, thermoses, cups, cans, flasks)

• Folding chairs

• Food of any kind

• Seat cushions containing any type of metal or those with pockets, storage slots, seat backs, arm rests, or attachments

• Strollers

• Video camera, tripods and selfie sticks

• Umbrellas

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
