Sixth hopeful enters Normal Town Council race

NORMAL – A Normal Town Council candidate, who announced her candidacy Tuesday, said she wants to be a voice for many who feel they’re not adequately represented in local government.

Pat Turner is the sixth candidate in the race for three council seats in next April’s municipal election. Turner said she’s spent about three decades working in the non-profit sector addressing such issues as food insecurity, homelessness, and senior care. In a news release, Turner said she founded the Center for Hope and Temba food pantries.

Turner is a past recipient of the local Martin Luther King award and was twice nominated for YWCA McLean County Women of Distinction honors.

Incumbent council members R.C. McBride and Kathleen Lorenz are each seeking second terms. They’re joined by new council candidates Illinois State University College of Business Professor Karyn Smith, Library Board member Joel Studebaker and Normal Planning Commissioner Dave Shields.

The council’s senior member, Jeff Fritzen, is retiring. Candidates can file petition signatures with the town clerk from November 19 through November 26.
