Amid political gridlock, the White House and Congress are unified that the U.S. Post Office in Uptown Normal should be named in honor of U.S. Army Ranger Joshua Rodgers, who died almost 20 months ago while battling ISIS in Afghanistan.

Central Illinois Congressman Darin LaHood announced Saturday that President Donald Trump signed into law a bill naming the post office at 200 W. North St. in Normal after the Normal Community High School graduate. Both Houses of Congress unanimously passed the legislation.

Sgt. Rodgers, 22, was killed April 27, 2017 during an hours-long firefight on his third tour of duty as a member of the elite special operations unit.

“Sgt. Joshua Rodgers is an American hero and we will forever be indebted to him for his selfless service to our country,” said Rep. LaHood, who’s a Republican from the 18th Congressional District.

“With President Trump’s signature, Sgt. Rodgers’ patriotism and sacrifice will forever be cemented in the Normal community. While we can never fully repay Josh for his service, this small step will ensure his bravery is never forgotten,” LaHood also said.

“It’s because of men and women like Sgt. Rodgers who risk their lives in service to our country that we remain free,” said 13th District Rep. Rodney Davis, also a Republican.

“It is a privilege to be able to honor his life and service with this post office and I look forward to seeing the ‘Sgt. Josh Rodgers Post Office’ in Normal soon, said Congressman Davis.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
