SPRINGFIELD – Should Illinois’ state workers be required to actually live in Illinois?

Illinois lawmakers in the state Senate gave that question a resounding “yes” last week.

The legislation would give a new employee not living within the state’s boundaries three months to establish residency in Illinois.

“For any position filled after December 31, 2019, no person may be appointed to a position based in the State of Illinois from any eligible list unless that person becomes a resident of the State of Illinois within 3 months from the person’s first day of employment in that position or unless the residency requirement is waived for just cause by the Director of Central Management Services,” according to the text of the amended bill.

Sen. Laura Fine says her bill would be amended in the House to grandfather in people are already employed by the state but live elsewhere.

“This bill requires all Illinois state employees to live in Illinois,” she said. “The amendment currently on the takes away opposition from the Department of Revenue as they have some employees who intentionally live out of state and when this bill goes to the House, it will be further amended to grandfather in all current employees.”

It got unanimous support in the Senate and now needs House approval it could be sent to Gov. J.B. Pritzker for consideration.

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31, the state’s largest public sector union, opposes the bill.

The majority of Illinois’ population lives within commuting distance of another state.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
