NORMAL – What once was called Diamond Star Parkway is now Mitsubishi Motorway, and with the backing of local governments, a section of U.S. Route 150 will soon be called Rivian Motorway.

With government approval, a service road will also be changed from Sakura Lane to Electric Avenue, not because of Eddy Grant’s 1980’s hit tune, but because electric trucks and sport utility vehicles are expected to roll off Rivian Assembly lines later this year.

Rivian has attracted Amazon and Ford Motor Company has investors, and company executives believe potential investors will be impressed if they see the factory is located on Rivian Motorway, according to a staff report to the Normal Town Council.

Town council members are expected to consider the changes Monday night, to be followed by the Bloomington City Council, and McLean County Board.

The board which oversees McLean County’s 911 emergency service would then have the final say, according to Normal City Manager Pam Reece.

“If all three jurisdictions approve it, the final approval would be ETSB, the Emergency Telephone System Board, because the emergency system has to acknowledge a name change of a road,” said Reece.

The staff’s report indicates three land owners who attended a community meeting with Rivian are okay with the change.

“Changing the name of your road does cause some inconvenience for folks,” said Reece.

“Certainly, you have to go through changing your mailing address and such, and a number of things. So, that’s why we wanted to talk to neighbors about it,” Reece also said.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
