Illinois State University President Larry Dietz participated in Gov. JB Pritzker’s Rebuild Illinois victory tour on Wednesday, expressing deep gratitude for the billions of dollars earmarked for higher education.

At an Urbana event, Dietz praised Pritzker and both parties in the legislature for a $2.9 billion capital plan correcting previously neglected maintenance issues on college campuses.

“At Illinois State, Rebuild Illinois allows us to be responsive to the maintenance and construction needs of our students, faculty, and staff at our Fine Arts complex and Milner Library that have gone unaddressed for far too long,” said Dietz.

Dietz calls the spending a solid investment in Illinois’ future.

“We know from our research that the students who receive their higher education in Illinois tend to stay in Illinois, work and become engaged in Illinois, and pay taxes in Illinois to support those who are coming after them,” Dietz said.

Joining Dietz and Pritzker on Wednesday were Southern Illinois University President Kevin Dorsey, University of Illinois President Tim Killeen, and Chicago State University President Zaldwaynaka Z Scott.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
