NORMAL – Normal Police are investigating an armed robbery of a taxi driver and a separate shooting that happened about a half-hour earlier Sunday night, but the crimes are apparently not related.

Police said the cab driver suffered minor head injuries after one of two passengers displayed a handgun and demanded money in a parking lot in the 200 block of South Linden Street, across from the Normal Police Department.

The suspects ran away after stealing an undisclosed amount of cash. Police are looking for two black males, but have not released a more detailed description of the suspects.

The hold-up happened a little after 9 p.m., about 30 minutes after shots were fired in northwest Normal, damaging a car.

Police said no one was wounded, but officers said they found three or four bullet holes in a car parked in a lot in the 700 block of South Golfcrest Road in Normal.

Investigators said they found at least one bullet casing from a handgun. There have been no arrests. The shooting happened about 8:30 p.m.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the robbery or shooting to call Normal Police at 309-454-9535, or McLean County Crime Stoppers at 309-828-1111.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
