NORMAL – A country singer and actor known for his distinctive bass-baritone voice will be coming to the Twin-Cities to help raise money for those in need.

The American Red Cross announced Wednesday that Trace Adkins will headline the organization’s 27th annual Evening of Stars benefit.

Adkins is known for his musical career with hits including (This Ain’t) No Thinkin’ Thing, Ladies Love Country Boys and You’re Gonna Miss This. His film and TV credits include appearances in The Lincoln Lawyer, Mom’s Night Out and I Can Only Imagine. Adkins will hold a Q&A with the audience then give a live performance.

Last year, Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy headlined the event and raised about $275,000.  Money raised goes towards disaster response, blood donations, and support to military members and their families.

Red Cross Regional Philanthropy Director Coleen Moore told WJBC’s Marc Strauss that Adkins has ties to the organization.

“If you were a fan of the Celebrity and All-Star Apprentice on NBC you saw Adkins on the show.  He broke the record with the highest amount of money raised for a charity by an individual in the history of the show, raising over $1.5 million for the Red Cross,” said Moore.

Tickets are on sale and start at $200 for the April 29 event at the Marriott Hotel & Conference Center in Normal.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
