SPRINGFIELD – Jerry Costello II, a former state lawmaker from southern Illinois, is the new acting director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture. He had been head of the conservation police at the Department of Natural Resources since shortly after Gov. JB Pritzker took office.

Costello, whose father is a former Congressman also named Jerry Costello, is a veteran both of the Army in Iraq, and of law enforcement. The appointment is pending Senate confirmation.

Costello takes the place of John Sullivan, ousted after evidence turned up that lobbyist Mike McClain’s “rape in Champaign” email had been in his Inbox in 2012. The man lauded for covering up the rape and ghost payrolling was a constituent of then-Sen. Sullivan.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
