SPRINGFIELD – You’ve heard it before – don’t go to the emergency room.

There’s more, though. “Not everyone needs to be tested for COVID-19,” said Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health. “Based on the CDC guidance, your healthcare provider will evaluate your symptoms, ask about contact to a known case, or any recent travel to an affected geographic area, and evaluate whether you are at higher risk for serious illness.”

Ezike announced a dozen new coronavirus cases for a state total of 105 across fifteen counties.

With bars and restaurants holding “last night open” parties Monday … or “first night back” parties when they re-open, Gov. Pritzker issued a caution: “Weeks from now, months from now, when one of those partygoers becomes sick, perhaps dire – somebody perhaps that might die – (restaurateurs and bar owners) should know that they are responsible for that.”

And the Illinois Emergency Management Agency director, Gen. Alicia Tate-Nadeau, said you don’t need all that toilet paper – stop hoarding!

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
