BLOOMINGTON – The McLean County Health Department announced only one new case of coronavirus (COVID-19) on Friday, moving the county total to 83.

“It’s certinantly encouraging that we only had a handful of new cases between Sunday’s case count and today’s case count we only had an increase of six new cases,” Cathy Covertson Anderson, McLean County Health Department Assistant Administrator said. “That’s very encouraging, but it’s too early to say where that places us.”

Of the 83 cases, McLean County Health Department Communicable Disease Supervisor Melissa Graven said three are workers of long-term care facilities. However, no long-term care facility residents have been affected by COVID-19.

“I think what that speaks too is the preparedness of our long-term care facility and the investment they have done to ensure their staff and residents are safe. I can tell you that I talk with several facilities several times a day before we even had cases in McLean County. They were on the ball to make sure they could do everything they could to have the PPE and protection control measures in place.”

Meanwhile, Gov. Pritzker announced 1,842 new cases and 62 additional deaths, moving the state total to 27,575 cases and 1,134 deaths.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
