Local police address information floating around social media

NORMAL – Police in both Bloomington and Normal have received a lot of calls the last few days concerning rumors that are circulating on social media.

Normal Police public information officer Brad Park said during these times social media definitely gets a lot of buzz. He said it can make people a lot more anxious, especially if the rumors are not true.

“The message I want to get across is we do live in a great community and we hope these people who are going out late at night causing problems understand that they are causing issues for their own community,” Park said. “We are just trying to get out there and do the best job we can.”

Park said if you think there is credible information on social media or you see a disturbance in the community, contact the police.

Both NPD and BPD said the rumors that looters would hit residential areas, at this time, are not true. Both departments said any information concerning the community will be shared on official social media pages and other verified communication platforms.

There has been looting at area businesses the last two nights. Authorities in Bloomington said about 20 looters were arrested Monday night.
