GRIDLEY – A pedestrian was hit by a car in a construction zone and later died at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center, according to McLean County Coroner Kathy Yoder.

Yoder says the victim was a 59-year-old man from Bloomington. He was pronounced dead around 10 a.m. on Tuesday. An autopsy is scheduled for later Tuesday. The victim’s name is being withheld until family is notified.

Illinois State Police said the driver of the car, 58-year-old Abuelsood Juma of Peoria, was travelling westbound on U.S. Route 24 approaching Ford Street in Gridley, according to a news release. The pedestrian, a construction worker, was standing on U.S. Route 24 directing traffic when he was hit by the car.

Authorities said the driver was charged with failure to yield to a construction worker and speeding.

The incident remains under investigation by the coroner’s office and ISP.

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
