BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington City Council member Jamie Mathy Wednesday announced he’ll seek a second term, citing unfinished business as his motivation to run next year.

Mathy was elected to represent Ward 1 in 2017.  According to a news release, Mathy believes there is a continuing need to prioritize infrastructure improvement and economic development without gutting endeavors that enhance the quality of life for Bloomington’s residents. He also feels that his presence on the council is important as the group works to usher to fruition several projects which are closely aligned with his background and skill set in the field of technology.

“We are working hard to make improvements to our infrastructure, but it took 40 years to get into this mess and it’s going to take a while longer to get out of it,” said Mathy, who added the FY21 budget allocates $8 million to road repair, sidewalk repair, and lighting.

“We need to continue to push to be business-friendly. Our One-Stop Shop is part of an ongoing effort to help people open or locate businesses in Bloomington,” he said.

Mathy and his wife Kelly, currently own two Bloomington businesses – Red Raccoon Games and The Decorators’ Grocery. Mathy was one of four founders and is the former chief technology officer of Mavidea Technology Group which was started to provide IT support to central Illinois businesses.

City council seats 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 are up for election in April.

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
