BLOOMINGTON – In an active day a Bloomington City Hall, members of the Bloomington-Normal Democratic Socialists of America gathered for a vigil urging that Bloomington re-introduces and passes a “Welcoming City” ordinance.
Following the national news of forced hysterectomies on ICE detainees, local residents want the Bloomington council to revisit the ordinance that failed to pass in 2018. A passed ordinance would limit local communication with federal ICE agents and protect undocumented immigrants.
“We have marched, we have fasted, and we have voted but still members of this council refuse to see the urgency of this situation,” said Bloomington resident Sonny Garcia.
“We cannot be a part of this system. We cannot be sending people into detention centers that are rampant with the coronavirus. And we cannot be part of the separation of families,” added Charlotte Alvarez, Executive Director of the Immigration Project.
During the Bloomington City Council meeting, the discussion of a public arts commission was tabled to develop a more specific plan of action.
