BLOOMINGTON – The Salvation Army of McLean County has started their annual coat drive; however, things are different this year due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
Angie Bubon, Development Director of the Salvation Army of McLean County, said one of the drive changes are the types of coats accepted.
“One of the biggest changes that we’re going to have this year is, unfortunately, we’re not going to be able to accept donations of used coats and winter accessories. That’s really to limit person-to-person contact to try and keep everybody safe. So we’re just looking to donate new coats.”
Bubon said the drive focuses on specific demographics this year based upon those not served by other organizations in the twin-cities.
“I think a lot of times what we see a lot of people who struggle to make ends meet and sometimes don’t have the means to buy a new coat to keep themselves warm…While COVID has changed things for us, we’re still trying to provide that services in hopes that we can make sure everyone can stay safe and warm this winter season.”
Due to COVID-19, the drive is only donating new coats and winter accessories to adults 18 and older and children five and under.
Individuals needing a coat can call the Salvation Army at (309) 829-9476, ext. 289.
