SPRINGFIELD – The movement to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day has hit Illinois.

Tony Leone of Springfield, part of the local Roman Cultural Society, does not agree. “This erase culture is really counterproductive, and I don’t think it does anything but a terrible disservice,” he said. “I think with Christopher Columbus, there is a story to be told. He was quite the pioneer.”

Speaking in Chicago Monday – Columbus Day – Ald. Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez says the evidence is in, and Christopher Columbus should be out.

“I think that there (are) no more excuses that we can find in order to continue honoring a mass murderer; in order to continue to honor a white supremacist holiday, which is what Columbus Day is.”

The alderwoman was part of a news conference promoting the idea of swapping out Columbus for Indigenous Peoples’ Day. State Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-Chicago) wanted to pass a bill addressing the state holiday, but COVID-19 truncated the General Assembly session. She says she will try again in 2021.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
