BLOOMINGTON – Monday marked day one for a man accused of shooting and killing three adults and seriously injuring a child at an apartment in Bloomington in June of 2018.
Sydney Mays is facing several first degree murder charges, charges that could put him behind bars for the rest of his life. Our news partner HOI ABC reports during opening arguments, the state said evidence would prove that Mays was the shooter.
“The evidence will show how this played out, show why it is, how it is, while there are two calibers of firearms that it’s still just one shooter,” said Assistant State’s Attorney Brad Rigdon.
Rigdon said Mays is the one person and only person guilty of shooting and killing Corey Jackson, Juan Carlos Perez, and Nathaniel Pena. Mays is also facing attempted murder charges for shooting and wounding Pena’s 4-year-old son, who can no longer walk.
“The court will see that the only person with opportunity, the ability, the person who was there and did the shooting, murdered those three individuals is the defendant Sydney Mays,” added Rigdon.
Michael Clancy, attorney for Sydney Mays said while the prosecution will present a significant amount of evidence presented by the state, all it will prove is that his client was the Bloomington apartment building on Riley Drive where the shooting happened.
“At the end of the day, he was there at 2:32, he was getting in a car at 2:37, that’s it. And for that reason Judge, you will find him not guilty,” said Clancy.
Mays elected not to have his case heard by a jury, meaning the judge will decide his innocence.
On Monday, Judge Casey Costigan was shown body camera footage of officers arriving on scene. Part of that graphic video showed one officer finding all four victims. He also heard from two of the victim’s girlfriends, who testified they were at the apartment before the shooting.
Testimony resumes Tuesday morning, when the judge will hear from more of the state’s witnesses.
