SPRINGFIELD – It was Union Yes, Paying People under the Table No outside the Capitol Thursday morning.

Members of the Carpenters Union joined Democratic legislative leaders and the attorney general rallied in front of the Lincoln statue to decry contractors who pay employees off the books. House Speaker Chris Welch (D-Hillside) says this is thievery – from everybody in the state.

“Of course, issues of tax fraud inhibit the state’s ability to fund critical needs like healthcare, schools, infrastructure, and social services,” said Welch. “If it wasn’t for these tax cheats, the state of Illinois would have $186 million more in our coffers.”

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
