SPRINGFIELD – This week’s reminder of winter should not be of much concern to Illinois farmers, according to Mark Schleusener, state statistician for the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
“I have a little bit of concern about the wheat crop, because it’s heading and could be damaged. Apples and peaches could be damaged,” said Schleusener, noting the corn and soybeans are just now in the ground. Crops which are emerged, he says, are in greater danger.
Corn is twelve percent planted. Soybeans are five percent planted. Both are ahead of the averages.
