Bickering over redistricting continues

SPRINGFIELD – The release of those census numbers which show the state stands to lose a congressional seat has whetted the appetite of political Illinois to talk about the every-ten-years redistricting.

With a current map that shows, for example, Chicago’s Chinatown drawn into four districts and a congressional district that looks like an almost completely non-contiguous claw, Gov. Pritzker Tuesday reiterated his promise that the new maps will be fair.

“I’ve also said that, in order for us to have an independent commission, we needed to have a constitutional amendment – something to actually change the way the process operates today in the Constitution.

“That did not happen.”

Republicans – who say the governor will not keep his promise for a fair map – dispute that constitutional amendment is necessary.
