An ethics package has passed the General Assembly

SPRINGFIELD – Primary election day will be in late June in 2022, if Gov. JB Pritzker signs the bill the legislature sent him in the waning hours of session. It’s part of an election bill which can make vote-by-mail permanent for some. The primary date shift is because the congressional map is delayed by the late Census results.

Republicans claim an ethics package falls too far short, especially when it comes to the “revolving door” between being a lawmaker and being a lobbyist. There’s a six-month buffer, but the legislature only meets half the year anyway.

The Senate has yet to take up a gambling package headlined by the legalization of betting on Illinois college sports.

SB 521 (ethics) has passed the Senate, 59-0, and the House, 113-5, and awaits the governor’s action.

SB 539 (gambling) has passed the House, 96-11-1.

SB 825 (election) has passed the Senate, 41-18, and the House, 72-46, and awaits the governor’s action.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
