BLOOMINGTON – For the past week, the McLean County Health Department is reporting one COVID-related death with 16 new cases of the virus.

According to the county’s Public Affairs Coordinator, Marianne Manko, 24 people are isolating at home, while 18,195 have been released from isolation and are considered recovered.

Officials report the county’s latest death is a man in his 60’s who is not associated with a long-term care facility. There are 234 COVID-related deaths in the county.

While there are no McLean County residents hospitalized with the virus, local hospitals are treating three residents outside the county for COVID-19.

However, there is a new concern for local officials, who say the Delta variant is already present in the county.

“The more transmissible Delta variant could lead to a rise in cases again and is especially dangerous for those unvaccinated,” Manko added.

On the vaccine front, approximately 159,303 doses of the vaccine have been administered in the county.

More than 365,900 tests have resulted in a cumulative positivity rate of 5.0%. The rolling 7-day positivity rate is 0.5%.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
