BLOOMINGTON – A local insurance agency is reporting over 1,200 claims in Illinois after severe weather left many in the Twin Cities with flooded basements.

As of Monday morning, Bloomington insurance agency, State Farm, reports a bulk of the 1,290 claims are from Cook, DuPage, McLean, and Will counties.

According to a news release, claim reports include wind damage, some hail, and backup sewer and drain due to water intrusion.

Flooding is not covered under standard homeowners policies; however, if a resident feels their damage is the City of Bloomington’s fault, a claim can be made to the city.

“Over the past couple of days, our city experienced an unprecedented amount of precipitation that has resulted in significant property damage for some of our residents,” Bloomington Mayor Mwilambwe said in a news release. “I am thankful that everyone is reported safe. I am also thankful for our city employees’ response to address the issues reported but also for residents helping each other out, a true sign of our character as a community.

Residents can submit a claim to the City of Bloomington by phone at 1-800-476-2669.

McLean County remains under a Flash Flood Watch through Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
