BLOOMINGTON – Child abuse cases are rising across Central Illinois, as the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) reports over 25,000 investigations.

According to Samantha Stevenson with the Child Protection Network, those investigations resulted in 6,000 confirmed child abuse cases in 2021.

“So we’re at about that 25% mark, that out of the investigations, 25% have been confirmed. That number is up way over last year in 2020. So that, those numbers might be a little (inaudible) because, in 2020, kids were locked down, they weren’t going to school, they weren’t in front of mandated reporters. But it will be interesting to see if those numbers continue to climb now that we are going back into school.”

Speaking with WJBC’s Marc Strauss, Stevenson said due to the large caseload, detectives, DCFS, police officers, members of the Children Advocacy Center, and social workers are handling the investigations.

“An investigation means that there has been a call or an accusation against the child. And then they have to go out and do their part and report and investigate that. Yea, that number is alarming. I don’t think people really understand how often this is happening. But we would really like to see some work continued to reduce that number and not have that number of over 25,000 investigations.”

Stevenson added that teachers could act as a safety net to stop child abuse with children returning to the classroom.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
