NORMAL – Car theft is rising in the twin cities, and a spokesperson for Normal Police says it’s partially due to keys being left in cars.

Speaking with WJBC’s Marc Strauss, Normal Police spokesperson Officer Brad Park said the department has been lucky enough to recover the recent thefts, but the public should be alert.

“We’ve had a few (car thefts) in the past few days. All of the situations involve the victims leaving their keys inside their vehicles. The vehicles are recovered a few blocks away from where they are taken from.”

Officer Park said as the summer turns to fall, now is an excellent time to remember to lock vehicles at night.

“Make sure all of your vehicles are locked up if you park on the street or on your driveway. And then also at night time, one thing we always try to press along to the public is to make sure your garage door is locked, turn on your outside lights and kinda secure up for the night every night.”

Officer Park added that hotwiring a car has become difficult for criminals looking to steal a vehicle with newer technology.

According to Park, the leading cause of vehicle theft is unlocked cars.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
