SPRINGFIELD – Two new state laws require health insurers to cover more cancer screenings.

The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 48,000 people across the country will die of Pancreatic Cancer this year. Sen. Adriane Johnson (D-Buffalo Grove) sponsored one law that mandates medically necessary screenings for the disease.

“Pancreatic Cancer just falls a little bit under the radar, although it is very deadly and lethal. That’s why this legislation is important because it will definitely save lives.”

According to the American Cancer Society, Colorectal Cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related death, but it has a 90% survival rate if caught early.

“What was happening is for people who took the (inaudible) test or the at-home test, the brand name, one of the brand names was Cologuard. And they got a positive result, then what was happening (was) insurance companies were treating the follow of colonoscopy as diagnostic and were not covering it,” said Johnson.

Johnson also sponsored the second law, requiring coverage of colonoscopies when recommended by a Dr. at no cost to the patient.

Both laws take effect in January.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
